These carpets were badly contaminated by soot, when a bird came down the chimney and was trapped behind a fire guard. Repeated attempts by the bird to fly back up the chimney resulted in the damage shown.

However, thorough deep cleaning resulted in all the soot being removed and the carpets looking as shown in the ‘before and after’ photos below:
